MV Logos Hope ... giving hope through books

The world’s largest floating book fair, the MV Logos Hope, featuring more than 5,000 affordable titles, has berthed at the Port Klang Cruise Centre and will be open to the public from 29 Sept to 23 Oct.

MV Logos Hope is the newest ship of Operation Mobilisation (OM), and replaces the MV Doulos which visited Malaysian waters for the last time in 2006.

With its expanded selection of books on science, sports, hobbies, cookery, religions and much more, MV Logos Hope will offer visitors a chance  to experience the floating library first-hand.

The fully air-conditioned deck, with an International Cafe which offers ice cream, drinks and snacks, will also be open to the public to explore.

The public will also get a chance to interact with the ship’s multi-cultural crew.

“As our focus is on knowledge, help and hope, we also work with other social organisations such as visiting orphanages and old-aged homes in order to bring practical hope where needed,” project coordinator, Eileen Chua, said.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to tour the multimedia Life Experience display, which shares information about HIV in an easy-to-understand story format.

Staff member Lucy Gardner hosts the display and will be available to answer questions on how to combat the social stigma of HIV/AIDS and how the virus spreads.

In addition, crewmembers will work in partnership with the Lion’s Club of KL Mega City and Welcome Community Home to provide food and free eyeglasses for people infected with HIV.

MV Logos Hope was designed to replace MV Doulos which was sold to BizNaz Resources International in 2009.

Over the last 32 years, MV Doulos had welcomed over 21 million people on board in 104 countries and had sailed around the world 16 times. MV Logos Hope has so far visited 39 countries after starting its service in February 2009.

MV Logos Hope is owned and operated by Gute Bucher fur Alle (GBA), a private international and charitable organization registered in Germany.

Since 1977, GBA has operated to promote good education and international understanding through its floating book fair and cultural exchange programmes.

The organization has welcomed 40 million visitors up the gangways in over 160 countries and territories around the world in almost 40 years of service.

MV Logos Hope will be open to the public from 29 Sept to 23 Oct in the Port Klang Cruise Centre, Pulau Indah. The opening hours are: Tuesdays to Saturdays: 10am – 10pm; Sundays: 1pm – 10pm. It is closed on Mondays. Tickets cost RM 1; children under 12 enter for free, but must be accompanied by an adult.
