Genre: Comedy, Drama, Sci-Fi

Director: Joshua Tank

Cast: Michael B. Jordan, Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell

The trailer was thrilling but the cast, relatively unknown. Nevertheless, this movie has the potential of becoming a runaway success for its producers.

The movie has a non-complex storyline with a non-complex script, but does allow you to spend time talking about your favourite childhood question, “What would I do if I had superpowers?”

Filmed as a mockumentary, the movie chronicles the story of Andrew, his cousin Matt and their high school friend Steve, whom, upon discovery of a Kryptonite-like rock that transfers powers onto them, are transformed into extraordinary beings with telekinetic abilities.

Each character has his own story, but the movie's focus is on Andrew -- a troubled and abused loner, who pretty much decides to self-document his life as a high school senior.

As they each discover their new abilities, they bond and spend much time together -- having fun times and also learning to manage and develop their newfound gifts. Their powers morph with time, enabling them to not only move objects, but eventually, to also fly.

We see Andrew through his lenses. As he continues to grow stronger than his friends, we see the darkness hidden within him, now tormenting and hurting those who had previously taunted him. This eventually leads Matt to set guidelines on the way they use their powers.

Despite at first wanting to manage his powers, bad circumstances eventually force Andrew over the edge, causing the emotional turmoil within him to spill and take over his life.

I do appreciate the director’s and writer’s attempt to highlight real and pressing adolescent issues -- bullying and abuse, peer pressure, misguided thinking and relationships – that are influenced by social surroundings, books and theories.

There is also a good display of the evolution of powers, in how one’s current personality gets affected by knowing of the special powers one possesses.

Chronicles has decent special effects, and a steady hand on the camera.

Dane DeHaan played his role of Andrew well, in presenting a young man with much conflict within himself, while having to deal with the repercussions of his actions.

This movie has been rated PG-13 for intense action and violence, thematic material, some language, sexual content and teen drinking -- by Nevina Kumaresan
