The competitions include essay writing, drawing, blogging, photography, colouring, and video montage.

The Speak Up competition will also be held this year, for the second time. It encourages students from secondary school level and upwards to submit proposals for projects that they can carry out in their local communities.

Winners of this competition will be given a RM1,000 grant which will enable them to execute their proposed projects. The results from these community projects would then be presented during the prize-giving ceremony, which will be held in October.

The competitions are open to the public, but FOMCA's main target group is students.

“We are encouraging students to participate (in these competitions) so that they will become a generation of wise consumers who are able to make decisions that are based on facts, not random impulses,” FOMCA president Datuk Marimuthu Nadason said at a recent press conference to launch the competitions.

“Education on consumerism is important, and that is why FOMCA intends to continue organising competitions such as these,” he added.

The top three schools that record the highest number of student entries for these competitions stand a chance to win cash awards of RM3,000 (primary schools) or RM5,000 (secondary schools).

Last year, the Malaysian Consumer Day competitions received a record-breaking total of 94,998 entries, as a result of aggressive promotions of the same, across the country.

This year, FOMCA looks forward to receiving an equally encouraging participation and has allocated RM200,000 in prize money.

These competitions are being held for the eleventh consecutive year and are organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism, the Malaysian Association Standards Users and the National Consumer Complaint Centre (NCCC), among others.

Applications to enter the competitions are now open. The closing date is on May 23.

Entry forms and more details about the competitions can be obtained from the 2012 Malaysian Consumer Day website at www.mypengguna.com.
