KUCHING, Feb 21 -- The Youth and Sports Ministry will carry out a dry run to test the implementation of the Youth Parliament in April, said its minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek. He said the dry run would involve selected youth leaders from each constituency for their first conference. "(Through the dry run), we want to improve (on the proposed establishment of a Youth Parliament) in terms of standing order, conceptuality, what field they do, what sort of parliamentary committee and others," he told reporters after chairing the Sabah and Sarawak Youth and Sports Ministry joint committee meetings, here today. Also present were Sarawak Social Development Minister Tan Sri William Mawan and Sabah Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Peter Pang. The establishment of the Youth Parliament was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak during the One Million Youth Gathering in Putrajaya last year. It is aimed at providing youths a chance to speak or communicate their views on any matter, through the correct channel. Ahmad Shabery said that the results obtained from the dry run would also be a basis before the implementation of the Youth Parliament road map at the end of this year. On the Youth Day celebration this year, he said the ministry had set a target to gather two million youths in the country at Putrajaya for the celebration, which would last for five days, beginning May 23. "We will work closely with Sabah and Sarawak state governments to bring more youth from both states to jointly participate in this celebration," he added. -- BERNAMA |
